Surgical Technician

Position

(Full Time)

Surgical Technician works as part of an operating room surgical team. They assist surgeons and other members of the surgical team during operations, including pre-surgery setup and post-operation tasks.  This person assumes responsibility and accountability for the duties of the position and is cognizant of the philosophy, standards, objectives, and policies of the Schneider Regional Medical Center and their respective Department.

Education & Experience

Must have a high school diploma or GED.  Certification as a Surgical Technician preferred.

Hazards & Physical Requirements

Risk of exposure to communicable diseases; blood and/or body fluids.  Must be able to stand for up to 6 hours a day, walk up to 1 hour per day, and sit for up to 1 hour per day.  Must be able to occasionally push/pull up to 50 lbs. and lift/carry up to 20 lbs. on an occasional basis.  

Specific Requirements

Current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Professional Rescuer BLS certification.  Knowledgeable and comfortable working with computers.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates ability to create and maintain a sterile field used in the surgical procedure.  Shows constant vigil to maintain sterility and ability to resolve breaks in sterility. 
  • Demonstrates dexterity in handling surgical instruments, sutures and equipment used in surgical procedures. 

 

  • Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy and understanding of the procedure and is able to anticipate the surgeon’s needs. 
  • Handles tissue specimen according to established OR policy. 
  • Recognizes equipment or instruments that are faulty and supplies that are out of date. 
  • Ability to process instruments through entire cycle:  decontamination, organization into sets, wrapping in appropriate medium, choosing appropriate sterilization cycle. 
  • Collaborates with other members of the care team:  surgeons, head nurse, circulating nurse, housekeeping staff and members of other departments in the hospital providing care to assure efficient and safe patient care. 
  • Demonstrates awareness of the patient’s safety during the surgical procedures such as safety straps on OR bed, obvious mal positioning of the patient, locked OR bed, hand washing compliance, etc. 
  • Participates in activities that maintain and organize the Operating Room such as re-stocking supplies in the suites, inventory control and up-dating of surgeon preference cards. 
  • And all other duties as assigned.
