Surgical First Assistant

Position

The Surgical First Assistant anticipates the needs of the surgical team and provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intra-operative technical functions that help the Surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The Surgical First Assistant also performs pre-operative and post-operative duties to assist in facilitating patient care. The Surgical First Assistant works under the direction of a Surgeon according to law and regulations as well as the hospital policies. This person also fills the role of a Surgical Technician when needed and in accordance with those duties and responsibilities and adhere with hospital and department policies and procedures.

Hazards & Physical Requirements

Risk of exposure to communicable diseases; blood and/or body fluids. Must be able to stand for up to six (6) hours a day, walk up to one (1) hour per day. Must be able to occasionally push/pull up to fifty (50) pounds and lift/carry up to twenty (20) pounds on an occasional basis.

Specific Requirements

  • AHA BLS Certificate
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and confidentiality.
